Illustrated saint

Saint Francis of Assisi

Handcrafted clay illustration of Saint Francis of Assisi in a brown habit with two little birds

He was born rich and chose to be poor. He spoke with wolves and sang to the sun. Eight centuries later, Saint Francis of Assisi is still one of the most beloved saints in the world — and the one who gave us the Christmas Nativity scene.

His life

Francis was born in Assisi, Italy, around 1181, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. As a young man he dreamed of military glory, until God caught up with him: in the ruined chapel of San Damiano he heard Christ say, 'Francis, repair my Church.'

He left everything — the inheritance, the fine clothes, the social position — and embraced poverty with contagious joy. Soon other young men followed him, and the Franciscan order was born, dedicated to living the Gospel simply.

He loved all creation as God's handiwork: he preached to the birds, called the sun 'brother' and the moon 'sister'. In 1223 he staged the first living Nativity scene at Greccio, and in 1224 he received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. He died in 1226, singing.

Why he inspires us

Saint Francis shows that true joy does not come from having more but from loving more. He is the patron of animals and ecology, and his feast is celebrated on October 4. His life of humility and love for the poor still inspires millions — even Pope Francis chose his name.

In Sacred Scripture

  • Matthew 19:21'Go, sell what thou hast, and give to the poor': the gospel Francis took literally.
