Illustrated saint

Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)

Handcrafted clay illustration of Mother Teresa in her white sari with blue stripes, smiling

A tiny religious sister in a white sari with blue stripes became one of the most recognizable faces of Christian love in the twentieth century. Her rule was simple: to do 'something beautiful for God' in the poorest of the poor.

Her life

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born in Skopje in 1910 to an Albanian Catholic family. At 18 she joined the Sisters of Loreto and was sent to India, where for years she taught and served as principal at a school in Calcutta.

In 1946, during a train journey, she received what she called 'a call within a call': to leave the safety of the school and serve the poorest of the poor in the streets. In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity.

With her sisters she gathered the dying, cared for the sick and abandoned, and treated every person as Christ himself. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and died in 1997. Pope Francis canonized her in 2016.

Why she inspires us

Mother Teresa shows that Christian charity is not a theory: it is touching, feeding, cleaning, and accompanying real people. She also lived long years of interior darkness without ever ceasing to serve — a testimony of persevering faith. Her feast is celebrated on September 5.

In Sacred Scripture

  • Matthew 25:40'As long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me': the gospel that guided her whole life.
