Illustrated Bible story

Moses Parting the Red Sea

Handcrafted clay illustration of Moses raising his staff between two walls of water

The people of Israel had just left slavery when they found themselves trapped: the sea ahead and Pharaoh's army behind. What happened next is one of the greatest moments in the whole Bible.

The story

After generations of slavery in Egypt, God raised up Moses to set his people free. After the ten plagues, Pharaoh finally let them go… but he soon regretted it and chased them with his war chariots.

Israel was trapped at the edge of the Red Sea with the enemy closing in. The people were afraid, but Moses said: 'Fear not. Stand firm, and you will see the salvation of the Lord.' God told him to stretch out his staff over the sea.

The waters divided into two walls, and Israel crossed on dry ground. When Pharaoh's army tried to follow, the sea closed again. That morning, the people sang for the first time as a free people.

What it teaches

The crossing of the Red Sea is God's great saving act in the Old Testament: he delivers his people even in impossible situations. The Church also sees in this passage through the waters an image of Baptism, where God brings us from slavery into freedom.

In Sacred Scripture

  • Exodus 14The crossing of the Red Sea: Israel passes through on dry ground and is freed from Egypt.
  • Exodus 15:1-21The song of Moses and Miriam celebrating God's victory.
  • Psalm 135 (136)The psalm recalls that God divided the Red Sea, 'for his mercy endures for ever'.
