Jesus Calming the Storm

The disciples were expert fishermen, and even they were terrified by that storm. Jesus, meanwhile, was asleep. What he did when he woke changed their question forever: who is this man?
The story
As evening fell, Jesus said to his disciples: 'Let us cross to the other side.' They were crossing the Sea of Galilee when a storm broke out so fierce that the waves were filling the boat with water. And Jesus was asleep on a cushion in the stern.
The disciples woke him, crying out: 'Master! Do you not care that we are perishing?' Jesus rose, spoke to the wind, and said to the sea: 'Peace, be still.' And there came a great calm.
Then he asked them: 'Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?' And filled with awe, they said to one another: 'Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?'
What it teaches
This miracle shows Jesus' power over creation — only God commands the sea — and his closeness in our fears. The boat in the storm has always been seen as an image of the Church and of every believer's life: Jesus is in the boat, even when he seems to be asleep.
In Sacred Scripture
- Mark 4:35-41 — Jesus sleeps in the boat, calms the storm, and asks: 'Why are you afraid?'
- Matthew 8:23-27 — Saint Matthew's account of the same miracle on the Sea of Galilee.
