Her story
The angel Gabriel visited Mary in Nazareth with an incredible announcement: she would be the mother of the Savior. Mary did not understand everything, but she trusted: 'Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.'
Mary accompanied Jesus his whole life: she gave birth to him in Bethlehem, raised him with Saint Joseph, interceded for the newlyweds at the wedding at Cana, and stood by the cross when almost everyone else fled.
From the cross, Jesus said to the beloved disciple: 'Behold thy mother.' The Church has always understood that in that moment Mary became the mother of all believers.
Why we honor her
Catholics do not worship Mary — worship belongs to God alone. We honor her as the first and most perfect disciple of Jesus, and we ask her to intercede for us, like a mother praying for her children. Her last advice in the Bible is still the best: 'Do whatever he tells you.'
